Seminar: Reimagining Ireland’s abortion care infrastructure through a reproductive justice lens
3 July, 1.00pm
Long Room Hub, Trinity College Dublin
As reproductive justice scholars and activists argue, reproductive autonomy is not simply about individual ‘choice’ in abstract, liberal sense, it is about critically evaluating and transforming the material, affective, and socio-political conditions that structure access, thereby enabling people to exercise meaningful control over their reproductive experiences.
Public and political debate pre-Repeal focused heavily on the legal framework within which abortion would be provided, post-legalisation. Far less attention was paid to the parameters of the post-legalisation model of care which is heavily restrictive, both in terms of gestational limits and eligibility criteria, but also in terms of the types of care which are available to Irish abortion-seekers, with surgical provision particularly difficult to access.
Attending to questions of criminalisation, stigma, and choice in relation to abortion pathways, this seminar asks how we might reimagine Ireland’s abortion care infrastructure through a reproductive justice lens.
This seminar will include three papers by scholars from Academics for Reproductive Justice Ireland.
